At Orlando Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Ghetiya offers TMJ treatment to alleviate discomfort caused by temporomandibular joint disorders. If you experience earaches, headaches, jaw pain, or limited jaw movement, Dr. Ghetiya can diagnose and treat your TMJ issues.

Diagnose and treat your
TMJ disorder

The temporomandibular (TMJ) joints are located near the ear, at the top of the lower jaw. These joints allow movement of your jaw. TMJ disorders are caused by injury, arthritis, or habits such as grinding the teeth at night. These disorders may produce some of the following symptoms: earaches, headaches, clicking or grating noises with jaw movement, pain opening or closing the mouth, and limited movement of the jaw.

Not all discomfort in the jaw is the result of a TMJ disorder. In many cases, stress causes the muscles in the jaw to tense, resulting in symptoms similar to those characteristic of a TMJ disorder. Special imaging techniques may be needed to diagnose and treat jaw problems.

Signs and symptoms indicating you may need TMJ treatment:

  • Earaches
  • Headaches
  • Clicking or grating noises with jaw movement
  • Pain when opening or closing the mouth
  • Limited movement of the jaw
  • Jaw muscle tension or discomfort
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Jaw locking or stiffness
  • Facial pain or swelling near the jaw area
  • Uneven bite or misaligned teeth

Why do you need TMJ treatment?

TMJ treatment is essential to alleviate pain and restore proper jaw function. Without treatment, TMJ disorders can lead to chronic discomfort, including persistent earaches, headaches, and jaw pain. Over time, untreated TMJ issues can worsen, causing difficulty in eating, speaking, and even breathing. Additionally, habitual teeth grinding can damage your teeth, leading to further dental problems. By seeking TMJ treatment, you can prevent these complications, improve your quality of life, and maintain optimal oral health.

What are the possible treatments for TMJ?

The necessary treatment depends on the specific diagnosis and severity of the joint damage. Often, a night guard that prevents clenching and grating of the teeth during the night is effective in treating TMJ problems. Night guards are fashioned to fit your bite by taking an impression of your teeth. This impression is then sent to a lab where your night guard will be constructed.

In addition to night guards, other treatments may include physical therapy, stress management techniques, and medications to reduce inflammation and pain. Severe cases might require more advanced interventions, such as dental adjustments or even surgery to correct joint issues. Dr. Ghetiya will thoroughly evaluate your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan to alleviate your symptoms and restore normal jaw function.
